04 Days / 03 Nights

DAY 1: BOAT TRANSFER – TAMBOPATA PORT TO REFUGIO AMAZONAS
Arrival and reception by the guide. Transfer from the airport to the Puerto Maldonado offices. Upon arrival from Lima or Cusco, we will meet you at the airport and take you to the Puerto Maldonado offices (10-minute drive), where you will be asked to repack only the essentials for the coming days and store the rest in our luggage room — this helps keep our boats light. We drive 20 km to the Tambopata River port, entering the Native Community of Infierno. The port is community-run. Lunch on the boat during a 2.5-hour journey, traveling through the Native Community and past the Tambopata National Reserve checkpoint into the buffer zone of this 1-million-hectare protected area. Upon arrival, the lodge manager will welcome you and provide important information for your stay. Dinner included. Optional night walk: most mammals are nocturnal but hard to spot — easier to find are frogs with incredible shapes, sounds, and natural histories. Overnight at Refugio Amazonas.

DAY 2: FARM VISIT AND ETHNOBOTANICAL GARDEN
After breakfast: Lake visit — canoe or catamaran ride looking for resident species like Hoatzin, Cormorants, and Caiman; occasional sightings of river otters. Macaws and parrots can also be seen flying overhead. A 30-minute walk from Refugio Amazonas takes us to a 25-meter canopy tower. A staircase with a handrail provides safe access to observation platforms, offering views of the rainforest canopy and species like toucans, macaws, and birds of prey. Lunch included.
A 5-minute boat ride downstream takes us to a farm owned by the charismatic Don Manuel from the nearby Condenado community. He grows a variety of popular and lesser-known crops — each plant has a specific use. Along the trail, you will see plants used for medicinal or other purposes: Garlic-Sacha, Deer Cassava, Cat’s Claw, Charcot-Sacha, Para-Para, among others. Dinner included. Optional presentation by a Refugio Amazonas staff member about conservation challenges, opportunities, and projects in the Tambopata National Reserve. Overnight at Refugio Amazonas.

DAY 3: MACAW AND PARROT CLAY LICK – BRAZIL NUT FOREST
After breakfast, visit the macaw and parrot clay lick, 15 minutes by boat from Refugio Amazonas. From a hide, you can observe dozens of parrots and parakeets descending to eat the clay (best viewed at dawn). Lunch included.
A 20-minute walk from the lodge leads to a peccary clay lick (Amazon wild pigs known locally as sajinos or huanganas) — herds of 5 to 20 individuals come in the mornings to eat clay. The chance of seeing them is about 15%, but the proximity makes it worthwhile. Other species like deer, guans, and parakeets may also be seen. A short walk from the lodge leads to an old Brazil nut forest harvested for decades — you will visit remnants of a camp used by harvesters and see the full process: collection, transport, roasting, and shelling. Dinner included. Overnight at Refugio Amazonas.

DAY 4: TRANSFER TO THE AIRPORT
Breakfast. Boat transfer from Refugio Amazonas to Tambopata Port. Transfer from Tambopata Port to the Puerto Maldonado office, then transfer to the airport. Depending on flight schedules, early morning departures may be necessary.
