05 Days / 04 Nights
Day 1: Cusco – Pona Lodge
Our adventure into the Manu jungle begins at 5:00 AM with a pickup from your hotel in Cusco via private transportation. We’ll first cross the majestic Andean mountains and visit the town of Huancarani, home to the pre-Inca burial towers of Ninamarca. We then reach Paucartambo, a colonial town known as the folkloric capital of the Cusco region. Around noon, we arrive at the entrance to Manu National Park and continue along a dirt road into the cloud forest. Here, we’ll observe Peru’s national bird, the vibrant Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, performing its colorful courtship rituals. We’ll reach the beautiful Pona Lodge by around 5:00 PM for our first overnight stay.
Day 2: Pona Lodge – Reserved Zone – Casa Matsiguenka Lodge
We depart very early at 3:30 AM from Pona Lodge to Puerto Atalaya, then travel by boat along the Alto Madre de Dios River and enter the clay-rich waters of the Manu River. After registering at the Limonal ranger station, we continue for five hours into the Reserved Zone of Manu. Along the way, we may spot herons, egrets, Orinoco geese, terns, skimmers, white and black caimans, and even turtles. There’s also a chance to see a jaguar sunbathing. Primates such as howler monkeys or squirrel monkeys may also appear. After a riverside lunch, we arrive near Cocha Salvador and settle into Casa Matsiguenka Lodge. In the afternoon, we’ll explore jungle trails and visit Cocha Otorongo, featuring observation decks and a 20-meter canopy tower. Keep an eye out for the giant river otters. After dinner, an optional night walk will allow us to seek out nocturnal creatures such as the black caiman, kinkajou, or even an ocelot.
Day 3: Casa Matsiguenka Lodge – Macaw Clay Lick – Casa Matsiguenka Lodge
In the early morning, we explore Cocha Salvador by catamaran, a floating platform ideal for observing herons, cormorants, eagles, falcons, monkeys, and giant river otters (which can grow up to 1.82 m and weigh 31 kg). Afterward, we walk about 30 minutes to reach the Macaw Clay Lick, where red-and-green and scarlet macaws descend around 10:00 AM. Their vibrant display can last 20–40 minutes, interrupted only by predators. After lunch at the lodge, we explore more jungle trails with our naturalist guide, who will explain the rainforest’s complex ecosystem. With luck, we’ll spot small mammals like the emperor tamarin, saddleback tamarin, or a herd of peccaries.
Day 4: Casa Matsiguenka Lodge – Tapir Clay Lick
We begin the day with another walk or visit to the cocha to hear the morning bird chorus. As the sun rises, raptors may be seen hunting from treetops. After lunch, we board our boat and travel downstream to Boca Manu and then upstream toward our next lodge. In the afternoon, we arrive and hike to the Tapir Clay Lick, where we will overnight in the heart of the jungle.
Day 5: Tapir Clay Lick – Cusco
We begin our return journey to Cusco by boat, followed by private vehicle. Arrival is expected between 4:00 and 7:00 PM.
