06 Days / 05 Nights
Day 1: Cusco – Paucartambo – Cloud Forest – Pona Lodge
Our jungle adventure in Manu begins with an early pick-up from your hotel in Cusco around 6:00 AM using our private transport. The journey takes us through the majestic Andean mountains where we visit Huacarpay Lake, a high Andean lagoon known for its unique flora and fauna. We continue to the village of Huancarani to briefly explore the pre-Incan funerary towers of Ninamarca, remnants of the Lupaca culture. From there, we head to Paucartambo, a charming colonial town considered the folkloric capital of Cusco. Around midday, we enter the Manu National Park and one of the most protected natural areas in South America. We descend into the mysterious Cloud Forest, rich with biodiversity. Here, we observe the national bird of Peru, the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, performing a spectacular mating display. We arrive at Pona Lodge around 5:00 PM for our first overnight stay. (B+L+D)
Day 2: Pona Lodge – Yanayacu Lodge
Departing at 3:30 AM, we head to the Atalaya Port, stopping en route to visit a hummingbird garden where we may also observe tanagers, barbets, king vultures, and titi monkeys. From Atalaya, we continue by boat to a natural hot spring, where we relax for an hour before heading to Yanayacu Lodge for the night. (B+L+D)
Day 3: Yanayacu Lodge – Reserved Zone of Manu National Park – Casa Matsiguenka Lodge
Early in the morning, we visit a parrot clay lick to witness various species of parrots, parakeets, and macaws. We then travel deeper into the Reserved Zone of Manu, transitioning from the clear waters of the Alto Madre de Dios to the clay-rich waters of the Manu River. After checking permits at Limonal Ranger Station, we journey upriver for about five hours, spotting herons, egrets, Orinoco geese, terns, and skimmers. We may see caimans, side-necked turtles, and perhaps even a jaguar. Along the way, we’ll likely observe monkeys such as howler or squirrel monkeys. We reach our Safari Lodge near Cocha Salvador lagoon and explore the rainforest trails. A visit to Cocha Otorongo lake includes a 20-meter canopy tower for excellent wildlife viewing. If lucky, we may see giant river otters. Optional night walks are available to observe nocturnal creatures like caimans, kinkajous, or ocelots. Overnight at Casa Matsiguenka. (B+L+D)
Day 4: Manu Biosphere Reserve – Casa Matsiguenka Lodge
Early in the morning, we explore Cocha Salvador by catamaran, observing birds and mammals such as herons, cormorants, eagles, hawks, squirrel monkeys, capuchins, and giant otters. These otters can reach 1.82 m in length and weigh up to 31 kg, consuming up to 5 kg of fish daily. After lunch, we hike jungle trails to discover the intricate ecosystem. Our guide explains interactions between insects and plants, and we look out for emperor tamarins, spotted-back tamarins, and even peccaries. Overnight at Casa Matsiguenka Lodge. (B+L+D)
Day 5: Casa Matsiguenka Lodge
Near the lodge, we visit a small clay lick where large macaws, such as scarlet and red-and-green macaws, gather regularly. This is an excellent opportunity for photography and observation of these majestic birds in their natural habitat. (B+L+D)
Day 6: Manu Reserve – Tapir Clay Lick
After an early walk or another visit to the lagoon, we listen to the morning bird chorus and observe birds of prey scouting for food. After lunch, we journey downriver to Boca Manu and then upstream to reach the Tapir Clay Lick. A short hike through the forest leads us to a hideout, where we spend the night to have a rare chance to see wild tapirs. (B+L+D)
Day 7: Tapir Clay Lick – Pona Lodge
We continue our return journey upstream. Upon arrival at Atalaya, we transfer to our private vehicle and drive back to Pona Lodge, where we spend the night. (B+L+D)
Day 8: Pona Lodge – Cusco
Our final day is a scenic drive back to Cusco, arriving in the city around 3:00 PM. (B)
