06 Days / 05 Nights

Day 1: Cusco – Paucartambo – Cloud Forest – Pona Lodge.
We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 6:00 AM in our private transportation. The journey begins across the majestic Andes mountains, stopping to visit Huacarpay Lagoon, a high-Andean wetland rich in flora and fauna. We will continue to the town of Huancarani to see the pre-Inca burial towers of Ninamarca from the Lupaca culture. Then we head to Paucartambo, known as the folkloric capital of Cusco, where colonial traditions are still alive. At noon, we reach the entrance to Manu National Park, one of South America’s most protected natural areas. Descending through thick fog, we enter the Cloud Forest, where we may observe Peru’s national bird, the Cock-of-the-Rock, performing its fascinating courtship display. We arrive at Pona Lodge around 5:00 PM for our first overnight stay. (L+D)

Day 2: Pona Lodge – Yanayacu Lodge.
Early morning, we depart at 3:30 AM to reach the Alto Madre de Dios River. On the way to Atalaya Port, we stop at a Hummingbird Garden to observe various species including tanagers, barbets, king vultures, and titi monkeys. From Atalaya, we take a boat to a natural hot spring, where we spend about an hour before continuing to our jungle lodge for the night. (B+L+D)

Day 3: Yanayacu Lodge – Manu National Park Reserved Zone – Casa Matsiguenka Lodge.
At dawn, we visit a parrot clay lick to see parrots, parakeets, and macaws. After this colorful spectacle, we head to the Reserved Zone of Manu Park, traveling from the clear Alto Madre de Dios River to the clay-laden waters of the Manu River. We briefly stop at Limonal ranger station for entry procedures. During the 5-hour boat ride, we observe birds, white and black caimans, side-necked turtles, nightjars, and possibly jaguars. We may also spot howler and squirrel monkeys. After lunch by the river, we reach our lodge near Cocha Salvador. In the afternoon, we explore nearby trails and visit Cocha Otorongo, with its 20-meter observation tower. We also look for a family of giant otters. Optional night walks offer the chance to see glowing caiman eyes or elusive nocturnal animals like kinkajous or ocelots. Overnight at Casa Matsiguenka Lodge. (B+L+D)

Day 4: Casa Matsiguenka Lodge – Cocha Salvador – Macaw Clay Lick.
We begin early at Cocha Salvador on a floating catamaran to observe herons, cormorants, eagles, monkeys, and giant otters. Later, we walk to the Macaw Clay Lick, where flocks of parrots and macaws gather at dawn in a colorful, noisy display. Scarlet, red-and-green, and blue macaws arrive around 7:00 AM, feeding on clay until a predator disturbs them. After lunch at the lodge, we hike jungle trails, looking for small mammals like emperor tamarins, saddleback tamarins, and even peccaries. Overnight again at Casa Matsiguenka Lodge. (B+L+D)

Day 5: Casa Matsiguenka Lodge – Manu Biosphere Reserve – Tapir Clay Lick.
At sunrise, we enjoy one last nature walk or visit to the cocha, listening to birdsong and watching raptors scan for prey. After lunch, we journey downriver to Boca Manu, then head upriver to a hidden jungle camp near the Tapir Clay Lick. At night, from a concealed observation spot, we wait quietly for the chance to spot South America’s largest land mammal, the tapir. (B+L+D)

Day 6: Papaya Lodge – Cusco.
After breakfast, we begin our return trip to Cusco by boat and private vehicle, arriving around 3:00 PM. (B+L)
