06 Days / 05 Nights
Day 1: Cusco – Paucartambo – Cloud Forest – Pona Lodge.
On the first day of our adventure into the Manu jungle, we will pick you up around 6:00 AM from your hotel in Cusco in our private transport. The journey begins through the majestic Andes, where we’ll visit Hucarpay Lake, a high Andean lagoon home to unique flora and fauna. Then we will visit the town of Huancarani, where we’ll find the funeral towers of Ninamarca, a pre-Inca cemetery of the Lupaca culture. We continue to Paucartambo, known as the folkloric capital of Cusco, a town that has preserved its rich traditions. At midday, we’ll reach the entrance of Manu National Park, one of South America’s most protected natural areas. We will descend into the Cloud Forest, named for its dense mist. Here, we will encounter Peru’s national bird, the Cock-of-the-Rock, performing its fascinating courtship display. We’ll arrive at Pona Lodge around 5:00 PM for our overnight stay. (L+D)
Day 2: Pona Lodge – Yanayacu Lodge.
Early in the morning, we leave our lodge at 3:30 AM towards Atalaya Port. On the way, we will visit a Hummingbird Garden, where we may spot several species of hummingbirds, tanagers, barbets, king vultures, and titi monkeys. From Atalaya, we travel by boat to a hot spring, where we will relax for about an hour before continuing to our next lodge. (B+L+D)
Day 3: Yanayacu Lodge – Parrot Clay Lick – Reserved Zone – Casa Matsiguenka.
Before heading into the Reserved Zone of Manu Park, we will visit a parrot clay lick to observe species like parrots, parakeets, and macaws. Then we continue into the Manu River, transitioning from clear to clay-laden waters. After a permit check at the Limonal ranger station, we journey five hours upriver. Along the way, we may see herons, egrets, Orinoco geese, skimmers, and sand-colored nightjars, as well as caimans, turtles, and possibly even a jaguar. We may also encounter howler monkeys or squirrel monkeys. After lunch by the river, we reach our lodge near Cocha Salvador Lake. We’ll explore the rainforest trails and visit Cocha Otorongo, with observation platforms and a canopy tower. We’ll also search for giant river otters. An optional night walk offers a chance to see black caimans, olingos, kinkajous, or even ocelots. Overnight at Casa Matsiguenka. (B+L+D)
Day 4: Casa Matsiguenka – Salvador Oxbow Lake – Macaw Clay Lick.
We start early on a floating catamaran on Salvador oxbow lake to spot various birds and mammals, including herons, cormorants, eagles, monkeys, and giant otters. The giant otter can grow up to 6 feet long and weigh up to 70 lbs, consuming 9–11 lbs of fish per day. After the lake, we return to the lodge and walk to the macaw clay lick. Here, scarlet and red-and-green macaws put on a colorful display beginning at sunrise. The scene peaks around 10:00 AM as the macaws descend to eat clay. In the afternoon, we explore forest trails, guided by our ecologist who will explain the rainforest’s complex ecosystem. We will look for small jungle inhabitants such as emperor tamarins, spotted-back tamarins, and possibly peccary groups. Overnight at Casa Matsiguenka. (B+L+D)
Day 5: Manu Biosphere Reserve – Tapir Clay Lick.
This day we visit Cocha Otorongo or “Jaguar Lake,” accessible via a forest walk. Here we might encounter woolly monkeys and pay special attention to plant signals indicating wildlife presence. After lunch, we head downstream on the Manu River and upstream on the Alto Madre de Dios River until we reach the Tapir Clay Lick area. From the river, we hike to a jungle hide (blind) where we’ll spend the night to increase our chances of seeing tapirs. (B+L+D)
Day 6: Tapir Clay Lick – Pona Lodge.
We continue our journey upstream. Upon reaching Atalaya, we switch to our vehicle to return to Pona Lodge for the night. (B+L+D)
